Insects, Butterflys, Moths and others.

All insects. I loved entomology in college, since moving to NC I finally get to see insects I only studied in books and not in person.

August 13, 2012-Found this guy high up in the tree, had a hard time getting a focus on him as I was holding my camera a bit higher than normal. (Day 44:365)

• August 27, 2011-Caught another Promachus - Giant Robber Fly in the field by some power line towers. I was actually looking for some dragon flies but never saw any. The winds started picking up over night. So I am going to post early while I still have power. Stay safe everyone. (239:365)
• August 18, 2011-Just a quick shot of this grasshopper deciding on which of my tomato plants to land on. He moved on quick as soon as I tried to refocus on him. (230:365)
• August 10, 2011-Living on the edge. Found this ambush nymph with a passenger in a field. Posting late today again…(222:365)
• August 8, 2011-Mug Shot. I swear he has lips and mustache. This is handheld, and could be a lot better, but thought the face was interesting even with the five o'clock shadow/stubble. (220:365)
• August 7, 2011-Caught the giant Red footed Cannibalfly mating. They didn't move as I got closer to them to photograph. (219:365)

• July 31, 2011-Found this ambush nymph on the gate to my ramp. I nearly crushed him with my fingers, as I was grabbing the gate. (212:365)
• August 2, 2011-I believe, this skimmer is a Cardinal Meadowhawk (Sympetrum illotum). This is the first time I have seen one of these. (214:365)
• August 3, 2011 - This is a Giant Robber Fly "Species Promachus rufipes Red footed Cannibalfly". He landed on the leaf above where I was shooting the red dragonfly, he seemed to be checking out what was going on, I snapped this and he took off. (215:365)
• July 28, 2011-Shot this about an hour ago, I am posting late as my Mom has been keeping me busy with other things and so I haven't been able to post early as I normally do. (209:365)
• July 27, 2011- On attack mode, or at least it looks like it to me. This is a wheel bug like I had shot the other day. (208:365)
• July 24, 2011- Wheel Bug - Arilus cristatus. Posting late today, I shot this with a flash as it was getting dark out and I wanted to show more of its features. These guys are considered a true bug in the bug world. They are classified as assassin bugs with that set up I can see why. Looks like a true monster as far as bugs go. For an interesting read on these guys: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/trees/wheel_bug.htm (205:365)
• July 20, 2011-I believe I have the id correct Blue Dasher. I also captured a huge blue skimmer, wasn't thrilled with that one as he never turned around. I'll see if I can find him/her again later on today. Thank you for all the comments on my spider shot yesterday. You folks are the best and really made my day. As I was outside shooting this guy, I found the spider from yesterday, this time he moved onto my neighbors screen door. Suddenly she doesn't want to use that door hmm....(201:365)
• July 19, 2011-This is the ventral view of a Black and Yellow Argiope - argiope aurantia. They are also called Golden Orb weavers, Writing Spiders or Garden Spiders. My neighbor called me to come grab a shot of it. She wanted me to see the top of it or rather it's dorsal side. So, she moved the web, the spider ran/jumped down and I was out of there. Nothing really phases me or scares me but put a spider in my personal space and my heart stops, my throat seems to clamp shut and when I get my voice back, my voice goes ultra soprano, my wheelchair can't move fast enough and I need to change my shorts. That was the end of my day outdoors, thank you very much. What did my neighbor do? She laughed the entire time!! On the ground, rolling around laughing! That's okay, wait until she sees a snake in the yard... (200:365)
• July 17, 2011-Finally caught a dragonfly. My wheelchair makes enough noise to scare off most insects whenever I try to get close to them. Today this one first flew off but I stayed where I was and watched him circle back and he posed for me. (Hey I'm telling the story here, so we'll stick to he posed for me, rather than say it's normal behavior). 198:365
• JULY 12, 2011-Found this Robber Fly with his dinner on the lattice work. For the first time I tried tone mapping, so I am not sure if I over processed it or not, just thought it looked kinda cool. (193:365)
• June 22, 2011-This is a Paper Wasp, Polistes fuscatus (Fabricius, 1793). I believe I have the correct species as there are many color variations. Found him sitting on the fence post as I was checking the garden out. First time I had one sit long enough for me to take it's picture and without me getting chased off. (What that translates to is: I had the chair in reverse and took off like a scaredy-cat) (Day 173:365 @sharkbayte)
